Nimbin Roots Music School was born from an idea a couple of Old Time music friends had, wanting to share Old Time music within the community and Nimbin Roots festival patrons.

Our first workshop was directed by Old Time fiddle and banjo player and enthusiast -  Gareth Bjaaland.

Based around Old Time Music, the 3 day workshops was held a few days leading up to the 2018 Nimbin Roots festival.

As you can see, our students and tutors were a happy and colourful bunch and have come away from the workshops enriched with new knowledge and friendship.

Summer Singing, Song Writing and Beginner Banjo workshops.  December 1st & 2nd 2018.

Our next workshop will be conducted on the weekend of December 1st and 2nd and will finish with a house concert and BBQ. Cost is $120 and includes 2 nights camping at Nimbin Showground.

Here is some information from our Summer workshop director - Lou Bradley:

"I will be conducting the song writing workshops with singing and guitar and Phil Chaffer will be your Banjo man.

My song writing and music career expands over  15 years and includes national and international song writing awards as well as an ARIA finalist and multiple Golden Guitar finalist for my original work. I have also written for and with and toured with many Australian artists including Sara Storer, Mark Seymour, Deborah Conway, Kasey Chambers and Troy Casser Daly. You can look at my website and links to my work here

Phil has been playing Banjo now for 10 years and has almost had as much touring experience as me, except when I leave him at home! Here's a link for you to watch Phil and I on stage during a town hall concert in Tamworth and another Tamworth fest show with Pete Denahy joining us playing fiddle:

Depending on numbers, we may also invite an extra tutor.

The song writing schedule will be based around a main theory class with hand outs each day and then we'll pair you off to write together. I will spend time with each pair and help you pull together the song/songs you are working on. The aim is to have one song at least between each pair to perform at the end of the workshop weekend.

There will be 2 blocks of instrument/singing  workshops each day with the main aim being taught to accompany yourself so bring along your instrument of choice.

The Sunday night will finish with a house concert and BBQ at our place! We will perform with our three piece band and whoever would like to perform their song that was written during the workshops is encouraged. We want performance to be an integral part of the school."

Cost is $120 and includes 2 days of workshops, tea, coffee and cake,  2 nights camping at the Nimbin Showground and the Sunday night BBQ and house concert.
